Funeral Etiquette

Simple guidance so you can focus on comforting the family.

What to Wear

Dark, conservative clothing is traditional, but respectful attire of any color is appropriate at most services today. When in doubt, dress as you would for worship.

What to Say

  • "I am so sorry for your loss."
  • "Your mother meant a great deal to me."
  • "I am thinking of you and praying for your family."
  • Avoid "I know how you feel" or explanations of why the death happened.

Should Children Attend?

Children can attend when they are prepared for what they will see and hear, and when an adult is free to step out with them if needed.

At the Visitation

  • Sign the register book with your full name so the family knows you came.
  • Keep your greeting to the family brief so others may speak with them.
  • Silence your phone before entering.

Flowers and Gifts

Flowers may be sent to the funeral home before the service or to the family's home afterward. If the family has requested memorial donations, honor that request instead.

After the Service

Grief lasts far longer than the funeral. A call, a meal or a visit weeks later often means more than anything said on the day of the service.
